"Stand away !" shouted the captain, and the gun went off with such a roar that I was nearly deafened by the noise and blinded by the smoke. The boat passed on and soon was out of sight.
I now knew that I was all right because no one else would come looking for me . I took my things out of the canoe and made a camp deep inside the woods . I caught a fish , made a fire and sat down to a very nice supper. After supper , I sat by the fire , smoking my pipe and feling pretty satisfied. As night came on , however, I began to feel rather lonely and so I went to bed .
For three days and three nights I lived like this . On the fourth day I set out to explore the island. I walked farther into the wood and , all at once , came upon the ashes of a fire . And they were still smoking !
This sight made my blood freeze . I stole back to my camp as fast as I could. From time to time I stopped to listen. Was anybody following me ? Was my father here ?Who else was living on the island?
