　　21.主語+be+the last+名詞+不定式或從句意為決不至于……，比較不……的

　　「例文」Breach of promise is the last thing that he is likely to commit.

　　「譯文」違約他是決不會的。

　　「分析」這也是一個主從復合句，that從句為定語從句修飾先行詞the last thing, 前面的為主句。the last(比較后的一個)是一種轉義的用法，意即屈指計算，它居比較后。不可譯作…是比較后一個做…的人，宜譯作決不至于…，比較不…的，這是一種強有力的否定方式。

　　22.not……but 不是……而是……； but not 是……而不是……

　　「例文」It is not that the scales in the one case, and the balance in the other, differ in the principles of their construction or manner of working; but that the latter is much finer apparatus and of course much more accurate in its measurement than the former.(實考試題)

　　「譯文」并不是說面包師或賣肉的人所用的磅秤在構造原理或工作方式上和化學家所用的天平存在差異，而是說與前者相比，后者是一種更精密得多的儀器，因而在計量上必然更準確得多。

　　「分析」這是一個并列復合句，連詞but連接兩個并列的表語從句。本句的句架為：It is not that……but (it is)that……在第一個表語從句中，主語是the scales in the one case和balance in the other(case), 謂語動詞是differ. in the one case和in the other(case)是對稱的兩種情況。第二個表語從句是一個比較句型，即是the latter和the former的比較。the latter(后者)指第一分句中的the balance in the other(case); the former(前者)指第一分句中的the scales in the one case.本句型屬正反判斷句。它包括二式，意義完全一樣。用得較普遍的是第一式，先否定，后肯定。第二式是先肯定，后否定；第二式的連詞and或but, 可用可不用。第一式常譯作不是…而是…，第二式作是…而不是….

　　23.had(would)+rather + than 寧可……而不……

　　「例文」I would rather die with my head high, with indestructible faith and profound belief in the destiny of our country, than live in humility and renounce the principleswhich are sacred to me.

　　「譯文」我寧愿昂著頭，懷著不動搖的信念，抱著祖國前途的深刻的信心而死，而不愿在屈從之下背棄神圣的原則而生。

　　「分析」這是一個簡單復合句。句架為：I would rather die……, than live …… and renounce…… would rather…… than ……意為寧可…而不…用以表選擇。Die之后的兩個with短語為伴隨狀況，修飾humility原意為謙虛(遜)地，本例中可引申為屈從之下，該介詞短語作修飾live. 句末的which從句作定語修飾principle, renounce意為背(放)棄.本句型表示主觀上的抉擇，常譯作寧可…，與其…寧愿….第一是表推測或設想，語氣較委婉；第二式是陳述語氣，較堅決。現在多用would rather 代替had rather.

　　24.If only 只要……就……；only if 必須在…條件下才……

　　「例文」If only we work with might and main, the difficulties will be overcome.

　　「譯文」只要我們大家全力以赴，困難必然會克服的。

　　「分析」這是一個主從復合句，逗號前為條件狀語從句，逗號后為主句。
