【考例4】 We thought of selling this old
furniture, but we've decided to ____ it. It might be
valuable.
A. hold on to B. keep up with
C. turn to D. look after
[考查目標(biāo)] 此題主要考查四個(gè)短語(yǔ)的辨析。
[答案與解析]A hold on to 不要放棄;keep up with 跟
上;turn to 轉(zhuǎn)向;look after 照看。本句話的意思是“我
們本想把這件舊家具賣掉，但是我們決定還是不賣它，
它可能有價(jià)值”。
4. look into vt.
(1) 注視……的內(nèi)部，往……里面看
She looked into the room and saw nothing.
她往房間里窺視，但什么也沒看見。
The man looked into the girl's eyes and wanted to say
something.
那人盯著女孩的眼睛，想要說些什么。
(2)調(diào)查，檢查
The committee is looking into the cause of the
accident.
委員會(huì)正在調(diào)查事故的原因。
11. more than
(1) more than“(數(shù)量)超過……以上”
People more than 18 years of age have the right to vote
in China.
在中國(guó)年滿18歲的人擁有選舉權(quán)。
[提示] more than one后接單數(shù)名詞時(shí)，在語(yǔ)意上雖
為復(fù)數(shù)，但用單數(shù)的謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞。
More than one house was burnt down in the fire.
不止一間房屋在火災(zāi)中被燒毀。
[拓展] more than + 名詞可譯為“不只是”，相當(dāng)于
not only;more than + 形容詞、副詞或動(dòng)詞可譯為
“很，非常" --- very;more than + 含有can的從句可
譯為“不”，常用來表示否定意義。
Tom and Jack are much more than classmates. They are
close friends.
湯姆和杰克兩人遠(yuǎn)不只是同學(xué)，他們還是知心朋友。
What they did more than satisfied us.
他們所做的事使我們非常滿足。
The cold was more than the children could bear.
寒冷是孩子們不能忍受的。
8. up and down adv. & prep.
(1) 上上下下
The boys went up and down the stone steps.
那些男孩在那段石階上走上走下。
(2) 前前后后，相當(dāng)于back and forth或backwards
and forwards。
The teacher walked up and down (in) the classroom,
with a book under his arm.
那位老師在教室里踱來踱去，胳膊底下挾著一本書。
(3) 到處，處處，相當(dāng)于here and there。
I have looked for it up and down.
我到處都找過了。
(4) 來來往往，相當(dāng)于come and go
In the street, cars are busy rushing up and down.
大街上，車輛來來往往。
