　　Dear primary school parents and families.

　　親愛的小學部家長們，

　　It has been another productive and exciting few weeks at the primary school in Tianjin. Two weeks ago, we were honored to have high ranking government officials from Australia and New Zealand come and induct our new English and arts captains for the new academic year. There were, however, two senior student leadership positions which hadn’t been chosen. These were the primary school captain and primary school vice-captain positions. The primary school captain and vice-captain positions are the highest student leadership positions in the primary school. Their chief roles include serving the school community and hosting school events and ceremonies. On Friday the 21st of September, 9 students from year 6 applied for these final two leadership positions. Like before, they had three minutes to convince a panel of 9 international and domestic teachers concerning their suitability. It was encouraging to see so many students enter the election and it was even more heartening to hear many students speaking fluently and convincingly in both English and Chinese before an audience of more than 200 people. It is my privilege to announce that Jack Hu has been elected as the new primary school captain and that Penelope Weng and Philip Chen are the new Primary school vice captains after there was a tie for the vice-captain position. Their student leadership badges were given to them on the 28th of September at assembly by senior teachers of the primary school. We congratulate them on their achievement and wish them every success as they begin their new roles as the student leaders of the primary school. For many of our students, I am sure this is only just the beginning of a lifetime of leadership and excellence.

　　天津黑利伯瑞國際學校小學部，精彩紛呈的兩周又過去了。兩周前，我們榮幸地邀請了來自澳大利亞和新西蘭的政府官員，并介紹了我們新學年的英語和藝術隊長。然而，有兩個高年級的學生領導職位沒有選舉。包括小學部長和小學副部長職務。小學部長和副部長是小學部最高的學生領導職務。他們的主要職責包括服務學部和學校活動。9月21日星期五，來自6年級的9名學生申請了最后兩個學生領導職位。像以前一樣，他們有三分鐘的時間來演講，9名國際和中方教師根據他們的表現進行打分。看到許多學生積極踴躍的參加選舉，而且聽到許多學生在200多人的聽眾面前流利而自信地使用雙語進行演講更是令人鼓舞。我很榮幸地宣布，胡雯裕當選為新的小學部長，翁紫暄和陳高非非是新的小學副部長。他們的學生領導徽章是在9月28日由小學部的教師在校會上為他們頒發的。我們祝賀他們取得的成功，并祝愿他們在作為小學生的時候，一切順利。對于我們的許多學生來說，我相信這也是他們多彩優秀生活的開始。

　　Haileybury International School Tianjin continues to be at the forefront of global education. On the 26th of September 2018, A high ranking delegation from Monash university came to our school campus for an exchange visit. There are 8 top universities in Australia and they have combined to form a group known as the Group of Eight universities. Monash university is in the top 5 of this group. Moreover, out of all the universities in the world, Times Higher Education ranks Monash university at number 80. For many years now, Haileybury Tianjin has trained, guided and mentored undergraduate and postgraduate Monash university education students who have chosen to complete their teaching practicums in China. China is the new frontier of the global education market and many astute Australian university students understand that the economic and political pendulum of the world has already swung towards Asia. Many Australian students have already taken the initiative in choosing to extend themselves by completing their practicums in China. Last year, five Monash university students completed a three-week practicum at our school. Under the guidance and mentorship of our primary school English teachers, they all successfully completed their placements. The program was enriching for the university students as it was for our primary school staff and students and we trust our close and mutually edifying relationship with one of the world’s top universities will continue well into the future.

　　天津黑利伯瑞國際學校繼續處于全球教育的前沿。2018年9月26日，來自莫納什大學的代表團來我校進行交流訪問。澳大利亞有8所大學，他們聯合起來組成了澳大利亞八校聯盟。莫納什大學是這個組織的前5名。此外，在世界上所有的大學中，世界大學排名中莫納什大學排名第80位。多年來，天津黑利伯瑞國際學校對莫納什大學本科生和研究生進行了培訓、指導，他們選擇在中國完成教學實踐。中國是全球教育市場的新前沿，許多的澳大利亞大學生明白，世界經濟和政治的鐘擺已經轉向亞洲。許多澳大利亞學生選擇通過完成在中國的實習來提高自己。去年，五名莫納什大學學生在我們學校完成了為期三周的實習。在我們小學英語教師的指導和幫助下，他們都順利地完成了自己的工作。這個計劃對于大學生來說是豐富多彩的，就像對于小學部教師和學生一樣，我們相信我們與世界大學之一的密切和互相啟發的關系將一直持續。

　　Five Monash education university students completed their teaching practicums in the primary school last year

　　The staff and students were thrilled to see you at the primary school parent’s information session on the 29th of September. Parents are always eager to know more about what actually occurs in the day to day operations of the primary school. They are also keen to know what their children are learning and doing. On the day, senior teachers from the different departments of the primary school gave speeches which summarized their pedagogy, curriculum, teaching methodology and overarching goals. The speakers included Vivian Jia (Head of Primary), William Fang (Upper primary English coordinator)，Nathan Williamson (Lower primary English coordinator), Eric Xu (Head of student welfare) and Rosie Jiang (Head of Chinese). It was an informative afternoon and we were also delighted to see our year one students inducted into the primary school following their initiation ceremony. Our year one students had practiced their part of the ceremony many times leading up to the important occasion and it was encouraging to see our youngest students bravely and successfully completing the ritual. Learning is a life-long activity, but one is never too young (or old) to begin. We trust that you enjoyed the information session as much the staff and students did.

　　在9月29日的小學家長會，老師和學生都很高興見到各位家長。家長們希望了解小學部的學生們的學習和生活。他們也很想了解孩子們在學習什么和做什么。當天，來自小學不同部門的教師們發表演講，總結了他們的教學理念、課程、教學方法和總體目標。發言者包括Vivian Jia(小學部主任)、William Fang(高年級小學英語協調員)，Nathan Williamson (低年級小學英語協調員)、Eric Xu(學生德育主任)和 Rosie Jiang(語文組教研組長)。這是一個精彩紛呈的下午，我們也很高興看到我們的一年級學生在典禮后正式成為小學生。我們一年級的學生在這個重要場合之前已經多次練習他們的表演，看到我們最小的學生勇敢地、成功地完成儀式，令人鼓舞。學習是一項終身的活動，從不分年歲。我們相信老師和學生都非常享受這次家長會。

　　Our club and afternoon activity programs are now in full swing. Learning does not just occur in a classroom nor does it only occur from a textbook. Some of life’s most important lessons are the ones we learn when we interact with others. Skills, qualities and virtues such as persistence, perseverance, team-work, self-confidence, leadership, precision, technique, dexterity, hand-eye coordination, bravery, sportsmanship, kindness, flexibility, creativity, patience, personal grooming and upkeep, assertiveness and strength can only be learnt and developed outside of a classroom. At Haileybury, every student matters every day. This means we focus not only on the academic progress of our students but also on their social, physical and emotional development. Joining and participating in extra-curricular activities such as Spanish lessons, golf, soccer, swimming, taekwondo, robotics, ballet, modelling, handicraft, painting and guitar are effective ways to develop oneself. I encourage all students to cherish the rare opportunities which have been afforded to them because you never know where your passion or hobby may lead you!

　　我們下午的活動課正在全面展開。學習不僅僅呈現在課堂上，也不僅僅呈現在課本上。當我們與他人互動時學到的東西是生活中比較重要的課程。技能、品質和美德，如堅持、毅力、團隊合作、自信、領導、精確、技術、靈巧、手眼協調、勇敢、體育精神、善良、靈活、創造力、耐心、個人修養和維護、自信和力量，這些需要在課堂之外學習和發展。在黑利伯瑞，每個學生每天都至關重要。這意味著我們不僅關注學生的學術進步，而且關注他們的社會、身體和愛好發展。參加西班牙語課、高爾夫、足球、游泳、跆拳道、機器人、芭蕾、造型、手工藝、繪畫、吉他等課外活動是發展自我的有效途徑。我鼓勵所有的學生珍惜這些學習的機會，因為你永遠不知道你的熱情或愛好的力量會促使你進步。

　　In the technologically advanced 21st century, the way students learn has changed significantly. Learning nowadays has become more efficient, accessible and fun. The days of using chalk and a blackboard are well behind us. Modern classrooms, such as the ones at Haileybury, have interactive whiteboards and projectors which can play videos and stream the internet. Most teachers at Haileybury use their laptops to assist their teaching every day and there are software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint which have made teaching and learning easier. Mr. Joshua Webb is a popular international English and drama teacher in the primary school and he has developed his own English website which is aimed at providing English learning support and guidance to the parents and students of his year one class. On the website, you can find videos, PowerPoints, songs, activities and games which aid and support what happens in the classroom. It is a useful tool to parents who want to help their children to revise and it is also a useful educational website for parents who want to learn some English themselves! We trust the extra effort that Mr. Webb has put into his teaching has paid off with some rewarding dividends in the English language acquisition of his year one students.

　　Tomorrow is the primary school’s sports carnival. Our students have spent much time practicing their marches and rehearsing their war cries for the carnival. Sports carnivals are a fun and exciting time for students as they are great opportunities for students to participate in physical competitions and games. We trust our students will enjoy themselves in the many games and races on offer on the day such as tug of war, cricket, badminton, orienteering, balloon popping, sponge throwing, running races and relays. This year there are 17 activities for our students to participate in. Moreover, it is the opportune time for our students to relax, have fun and enjoy themselves.

　　明天是小學的運動會。我們的學生花了很多時間練習隊列，排練并練習運動會的口號。運動會對學生來說是一個有趣和令人興奮的時刻，因為這是他們參加體育競賽和游戲的機會。我們相信，我們的學生將會在許多比賽和當天提供的比賽中享受自己，如板球，羽毛球，定向運動，氣球爆裂，海綿投擲，跑步比賽和接力賽。今年有17項活動我們的學生可以選擇參加。這會讓我們的學生放松，享受樂趣，享受自己。
