英美經濟貿易報刊在描寫經濟貿易發展趨勢時經常要根據過去，目前情況對未來表示預測，如：
A survey of leading bankers projects that job cuts in the industry will average some 90,000 jobs annually until the year 2000.
一份由主要銀行家提供的調查報告預計，到2000年，工業方面每年將大約削減9萬份工作。
On the other hand, unemployment is expected to rise everywhere, to the highest level known since the Korean war.
另一方面，失業人數預計會在全球范圍內上升，達到朝鮮戰爭以來的最高水平。
Moreover, monetary policy cannot ignore fiscal policy. The Fed will probably want to wait and see how much near-term deficit reduction is contained in the 1996 federal budget before sanctioning another drop in rates.
此外，貨幣政策不能忽視國家的財政政策。聯邦儲備委員會很可能在批準利率再度下調之前等待和觀望1996年的聯邦預算短期赤字削減為多少。
用于預測未來經濟貿易發展趨勢的詞匯主要有：forecast, project, anticipate, expect, hope, etc.
對未來的經濟與貿易政策和發展趨勢所作出的預測，通常有如下三種形式：1) 肯定的(certain)；2) 可能性比較大的(probable)；3) 只有一般可能性的(possible)。
1. 表示通貨膨脹肯定要上升時的表達方式：
Inflation will / is bound to / is certain to / is about to / will certainly / will surely / will definitely / will no doubt increase.
(It is certain that inflation will increase.)
2. 表示通貨膨脹很有可能要上升的表達方式：
Inflation is likely to / should / would / will probably increase.
(It is probable that inflation will increase.)
3. 表示通貨膨脹只是一般有可能上升的表達方式：
Inflation may / will possibly / might / could increase.
(It is possible that inflation will increase.)
西方報刊中，表示經濟貿易狀況及預測未來發展趨勢的詞匯很多，除以上提到的動詞機構外，還有名詞、形容詞。另外，掌握固定的前置詞結構，對準確把握和理解經濟貿易發展變化的程度也很有幫助。
常與百分比搭配使用的固定前置詞有：
to grow / to fall / to increase / to rise / to cut / to go down / to drop by 5%
to run at a rate of 5%
